Well, at least Hamas ultimately wants it restored and put on display. Though that might change once the even more radical Al Qaeda-aligned groups in Gaza start calling for its destruction as “un-Islamic”.

Ghrab says he cut off one of the fingers to take to a metals expert, thinking it might have been made of gold. Unbeknownst to him, one of his brothers severed another finger for his own checks. This was melted down by a jeweller.

Arrgghh!

Because weathered green tinged bronze looked just like gold to him? Gold does not turn green idiots! Sigh, that was a very intact bronze for the time period being estimated. Goodness knows what shape it will be in before it ever reaches a museum setting with people like that dealing with it.

From what they can tell it was cast sometime between the 5th and the 1st century BC, making it at least 2,000 years old.

His mother was less happy when she saw the naked Apollo carried into the house, demanding that his private parts be covered. “My mother said ‘what a disaster you have brought with you’ as she looked at the huge statue,” said Ghrab.

Wow we’ve made so much progress.

“I felt it was something gifted to me by God,” the bearded Ghrab told Reuters. “My financial situation is very difficult and I am waiting for my reward.”

You’d do better if you didn’t cut off its goddamn finger, genius. If this were a folk story, Apollo would come down there himself and kick his ass.
